Emerging from its origins in Sportsmen Tea, a trusted name in Sri Lanka’s tea industry for over 25 years, ENRICH has established itself as a trend-setting exporter of top-quality Sri Lankan food &  Pure Ceylon Tea, and a wide spectrum of premium food and beverage products, including rice, spices, kithul treacle and jaggery, Ready-To-Eat meals, and coconut-based offerings. Recognized for its commitment to excellence, the company carries the Sri Lanka Tea Board’s Lion Logo for Pure Ceylon Tea and the Ozone Logo for environmentally responsible practices, alongside certifications from ISO, HACCP, GMP, JAS, ORGANIC EU, and USDA, reflecting a steadfast dedication to quality, sustainability, and global standards.

From the bustling markets of Colombo to export hubs across Asia, the story of Enrich is one of vision born from necessity, carried forward through discipline, and strengthened by family values.

It began on November 17, 1983. A schoolteacher from Hambantota who has been disciplined by profession and humble by nature, resigned from his secure government post and moved to Colombo in search of a new livelihood. There was excitement and a burning drive to do something different, to understand the workings of trade and to explore the possibilities of foreign markets. With the unwavering support of his siblings, he sought guidance from industry veterans at companies like Hemas and Maliban, absorbing their knowledge on everything from supply chains to export protocols, market positioning, and the art of building trust with buyers across borders.

Through careful observation and attentive listening, he recognized something constant in Sri Lankan life: tea, enjoyed at any hour of the day, regardless of social standing. That realization became the seed of a new venture. Tea was purchased at the auction, packed at the tea centre, sealed traditionally by burning the edges of plastic packaging, and sent to Colombo by train in the night mail. From there, it was repacked into one-kilogram and ten-kilogram parcels, loaded onto a push bicycle, and sold at the ‘Sunday Pola’ in the southern towns of Mathugama, Agalawatta, Bulathsinhala, and Horana.

Building on its experience with Nestlé, Enrich carefully expanded its international footprint. The company began exporting leading Sri Lankan food brands and actively participated in overseas trade fairs and buyer–seller meetings to cultivate meaningful global partnerships. A defining moment came in 2009, when the Export Development Board of Sri Lanka hosted a trade expo in Saudi Arabia, opening the door to significant export opportunities. Around 2010, the company identified China as a market with untapped potential. Recognising the limited presence of black tea there, Enrich strategically introduced the product, securing a landmark order from a government-contracted buyer. By 2012, China had evolved into a stable and profitable market, positioning Enrich as the second-largest exporter of Sri Lankan tea to the country.

Expansion continued thoughtfully into Europe, Australia, and Canada, supported by a 2018 partnership with Ernst & Young, which provided expertise in both sales development and factory expansion. The challenges brought by the global pandemic prompted a deliberate diversification of the product portfolio. Rice, spices, and ready-to-eat meals emerged as high-potential growth areas, complemented by backwards integration in manufacturing curry powders and ready-to-eat meals. While the Nestlé business remained a major contributor to revenue, leadership implemented a three-year corporate plan designed to strengthen Enrich’s own brands and private label offerings, reflecting a strategic vision for independence and sustainable growth.

This emphasis on innovation also brought Sri Lanka’s unique agricultural products to international consumers. Speciality items such as pineapple and thambili were introduced, highlighting the company’s commitment to sharing the country’s distinctive flavours with global markets. Today, Enrich balances market demand with operational efficiency, while continuing to build a corporate image that conveys both reliability and quality. Engagement with overseas Sinhalese and Tamil communities remains a priority, fostering enduring relationships grounded in trust and shared heritage.

Throughout its growth, the company has remained anchored in the founding values instilled by its founder: discipline, honesty, teamwork, and the importance of keeping one’s word. Profits are consistently reinvested into the business to support growth and development rather than personal gain. Even during challenging periods, employees have been supported through bonuses when dividends were not possible, fostering loyalty and a culture of mutual respect. Transparency in decision-making has become a hallmark of the company’s operations, reinforcing a collective sense of purpose across all levels.

In 2024, Enrich took a significant step in corporate social responsibility by investing 3.5 million LKR in a tree-planting initiative in Maskeliya, planting valuable species such as beheth nelli as part of broader conservation efforts. From sealing tea packets by hand to becoming a trusted multi-product exporter, the company has always been guided by a singular principle: advance to the next step only when the current step is strong.
